Roller Derby: Auckland vs Christchurch!

events, roller derby, self-discovery, You Tube
If you haven’t seen or heard about Roller Derby before – you should seriously get on top of that… Its a craze that has been resurrected from the 1930 and 1940’s into a current world wide competitive sport!!  Its athletic, got a seriously thick rule book and is one of the few Women only sports.  (Boys are welcome to referee however!)

If you don’t know how it works there are plenty of YouTube videos out there explaining it and no doubt there’s a local league in your area with ladies all around would love the opportunity to explain it all to you!!

I played under the alias “Phloss-a-Raptor for almost three years in Auckland which now has two Roller Derby leagues; The Pirate City Rollers and Auckland Roller Derby League.  Its a big time commitment, big lot of fitness and a great way to gain self confidence while surrounding yourself with strong self assured women!
It’s North vs South next month as Auckland Roller Derby takes on Christchurch’s Dead End Derby in Auckland Central’s first big roller derby event of the year at Pitt Street YMCA on April 14.
True blue Auckland Roller Derby joins the likes of the Auckland Aces, the Northern Mystics and the iconic Auckland Blues by donning the city’s favourite colour, and like the top teams, will be looking for your support when it takes on the might of the South Island’s biggest and strongest city.
Auckland Roller Derby features some of New Zealand’s top roller derby talent. With skaters who have competed regionally, nationally and internationally, Auckland Roller Derby will be the team to watch out for in 2012.
Christchurch’s Dead End Derby has come out fighting. Not to be fazed by catastrophic events over the last year, the green and black skaters of Dead End Derby are tougher, stronger and more determined than ever. The Christchurch side also features top level skaters who have competed on the world stage, so make sure you secure your tickets now to this event.
April 14 is your only chance to see Auckland vs Christchurch in the City of Sails this year, so don’t miss out. Tickets are just $15 for adults (or free for under 6s). Grab one now, at Under the Radar.

Polyvore: No labels in an Absolut world

Fashion, roller derby
A summer Polyvore….  Rock n roll, Pin-up Style Guide
No labels in an Absolut world

I called this No Labels for two reasons.. Firstly I’m a HUGE fan of Absolut Vodka (bottle collector) and because mustaches are one of those quirky cool things that are around at the moment defying steriotypes. I think I wore one out last week actually 🙂

How to beat PMS blues!

Inspiration, Life, roller derby, Writing

Monday I was all laid up, just wanting to curl up in the foetal position and rock slowly back and forth.  That highly strung emotional feeling, where if someone crosses you, you might burst into tears…  Boys- if you’re reading this LISTEN, it’ll stand you in good stead to look after an adoring woman in your life – whether it be a sister, mother, daughter or partner!
Here are 5 things really helped!
1) Exercise.  As much as it might seem impossible from your curled up position on the couch, this really works.  Decide your level of exercise in relation to the amount of pain your in.  More grumpy, less pain should equal more exercise. More pain proportionate to grumpiness should equal medium to light exercise.  Monday evening I got up and went for a delightful walk in Albert Park after work.  I’d been sitting hunched over my desk all day so stretching my legs and getting some evening sunshine and (city) fresh air was delightful.  If your going for a walk, make sure you go somewhere you can rest or break up your bout of exercise in case of cramp onsets.  Take a small blanket for grass or keep an eye out for handy park benches.
If your feeling horrible and bloated remember its only a temporary thing and exercise will burn calories as well as help with the physical / mental “Bah-Humbug-ness”!
2) Diet.  Before you roll your eyes at this one, I know every PMS post on the internet generally mentions something about diet.  I’m just suggesting that you eat healthy, with a couple of local alternatives to making it yourself or going out to the grocers to pick up all the veggies and ingredients!  If you live in a central city order HabitualFix!  Its healthy, delivers to your door, and is DELICIOUS! Alternatively your supermarket deli has yummy pre-made salads – inc pasta and carby potato variets ready to go. Bonus with that is you can pick up some chocolate on the way out too.  Remember to get Dark Chocolate tho, its gonna satisfy those chocolate cravings for longer!
If your feeling crampy, bloated, cranky, and in desperate need of chocolate? Well, apparently now there’s an app for that.

Betty Crocker Warm Delights has launched a new app called PMS SOS, which promises to provide “a little advanced warning, a bit more understanding and support, and a lot of chocolate.”
3)Hot Water Bottle, a warm blanket and a Rom Com!  I spent last night (after my little walk to the park for fresh air) curled up on the couch watching the Time Travelers Wife.  The perfect soppy movie to help me release that emotional tention. Its ok to have a wee cry.  Boys, partners, wives, husbands: if you know its PMS time, just be there for hugs, asking “What’s the matter” can wait till later…
4) Rant to an understanding group of women. If you are a roller derby girl, they’ll tell you to roll on out and take your frustration out on the track – Not a bad theory really. However as always, that’s not going to suit everyone.  I have an amazing group of close friends I can email or message when I ever I get wound up about something!  They’re sympathetic but also level headed and remind me that my hormonal mood swings are infact temporary! THANK GOODNESS!
Don’t think you don’t have that support group too… You have your friends’ phone numbers?  Work email addresses or Twitter accounts?  Use them and you’ll probably find they do the same in the future too!
5) Take natural remedies and Vitamins.  Although I’m no doctor, I know there are plenty of mood boosting herbal remedies you can easily get from a chemist.  Serotonin, St John’s Wart, Olive Leaf, a Multi Vitamin, Omega3 to name a few!!  Double check with your doctor if in doubt!!  I take several of these and really notice the difference in my mood if I forget..
All of the above is REALLY not making any difference…??  Look up Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) – there’s plenty of info out there to help ladies!

Its not a hobby its a lifestyle..

Inspiration, Life, roller derby

Its not a hobby its a lifestyle is a common quote among religiously addicted derby girls. To a point where if the derby girl is dating somone who doesn’t support the derby lifestyle said girl is either:  Not playing derby anymore or the derby girl and afore said partner are no longer together… Its a pretty harsh reality.  Why am I writing about this?  Well I’m a notorius workaholic or bordaline hyperactive, and try to cram far too much into my life that inevitably leads to me catching the flu, having a minor melt down or quitting one activity and then regretting it later.

I love being busy and I love doing a huge amount of crazy activities – Gym, Ceroc/Latin dance, Acrobatics, Burlesque, boxing and potentially this coming year referreeing Roller Derby. Mad? Yes, oh and these are all evening, weekend or extramurial activities. Not metioning that I blog, organise a Burlesque brand in NZ called Queerlesque and work 9-5 in adult education, L&D type role.

I suppose you could say I have a work, personal life balance. I work hard both, but this year for the sake of my health I’m really thinking can I fit everything in?  Or from my determined can-do, can’t say no attitude.. “How can I do all of this, not go mad, and not burn out!?” My girl friend and I were having a talk about my schedule and lifestyle and she jokingly suggested she be my manager.. Not a silly idea, right?

So early nights, vitamins and eating healthy is the first thing I’m going to focus on.. Burlesque generally isn’t to stressful, I enjoy dancing, making up routines, and costume shopping. I try and keep a diary on me most of the time so I can book myself in propperly with out double booking.  Really I should get with the times and switch from a hard copy to all electronic Google Calendar system but its so hard to let go of my beautiful diary/ FiloFax style organiser! Come on – its pink!  At least I can sync Facebook events that I’ve agreed to attend with my google calendar / phone notifications.  Handy I must say – if you don’t do it… its relatively simple to do, just once you’ve update the calendar double check if your phone is on auto or manual sync.

As far as exercise and sporting activities go, I miss Roller Derby.. I took a huiatius in July 2011 and am now thinking about returning, for 2012.  I’m looking at Reffing as I love the game, love to be involved in it and help out where I can but have to keep in mind my Burlesque earns me money and giant bruises all over my body (I really do bruise like a peach!) is really not a good look and can look horrible covered in makeup. Definitely a compromise between the two but I think it will be do-able.  SO once the season starts I’ll find out how the derby time table fits into my schedule – Lets see if I can make this lifestyle WORK!  Wish me luck!!

Roller Derby – The Game Changer

roller derby
I’m playing Roller Derby this weekend at the YMCA!  Come along and support the Pink and Yellow!!

The Game Changer:

The league’s two hottest teams will battle it out for one last time this year on July 16. It all comes down to this. Having knocked crowd favourites Mascara Massacre out early in the season, New Zealand’s oldest roller derby team, Dead Wreckoning, has to face off against new force to be reckoned with, Alpha Beta Slammers, in a do-or-die match to decide which team takes home the Black Dahlia Cup for 2011.
Dead Wreckoning knows the faces of Alpha Beta Slammers well – for years, many of Alpha Beta Slammers‘ finest donned the black and white skeletons, helping the mighty Dead Wreckoning dominate, game after game. But with the creation of the Slammers this year, experience was spread amongst the league, dividing the conquerers.
Now these two teams square off for the first time ever – you do not want to miss this powerful display of fever pitch sprinting, blocking and tactical strategy. If you see one game of Pirate City Roller Derby in 2011, this is the one!

Life shouldn’t be boring in winter!

burlesque, Club Kids, roller derby

In the southern Hemisphere its Winter…. well and truly COLD.   I’ve just moved house so I litterally have less than 100 metres to walk to get to work.   The cold snap is totally a wakeup call…  followed swiftly with a strong cup of coffee from the Little Cake Kitchen  – White Chocolate Mocha or Ginger, Lemon and Honey… Mmmmmm Delicious first thing as a wake up or pick me up!

I’m looking out the window for work and over the last few hours have watch a pea soup fogg lift of the city.  There’s still a little remaining over the harbour.. its so beautiful…  Monday morning there was patches of sun shining through the fog which to me looked like fairy fingers or a disco building….

My pet hate is the idea of turning into hybernating bears in the winter… Staying home and vegging out on the couch.  That has its time and place in someones arms all wrapped up nice and cosy.  Cold weather shouldn’t be an excuse…  Wind, rain and stormy weather… now that’s another story…
So I haven’t been hybernating obviously I’ve been out and about – Performing and dressing up like a giant oversized pink doll girl.  Oh and playing Roller Derby!

Drag Queens and Tits… the two most opposite things in the world right!?  Love it!

Roller Derby – Another amazing sport full of stong minded women who are not afraid to speak their minds, drink lots, give each other a bash or two on the track and wear “Shiney Whore Tights” and spanky pants in public.   These girls are my family… of sorts anyway…  My advice to any derby girl…  – Dont ever lose your ‘non-derby’ friends…

This is my inspiration for a painting I’m currently working on for my wife!
