I woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life

Hair

I cut off all my hair – this is one of the last pictures i took of my silly face before the chop! Bye hiding behind my big mop.
Hello radical femme identity. Happiness is a fresh new haircut.

Life is too short to have boring hair.

There is something about a woman with short hair that just screams “power”. Going from long hair to short is not just a change in length, but a change in attitude. If your hair looks good and you have on great shoes, you can get away with anything.

Coloured Hair a Trend at NZ Fashion Week 2012

Hair

BbPink hair has always been my signature brand colour.  I’ve had pink hair for over 8 years now with only a small 2 month horrible stint of black hair.   I didn’t expect to see many other coloured locks at Fashion Week, and was super excited when there was!!  I love colour; amazing to see to lots of it all around fashion.

Fashion Row ran a piece, Thread.co.nz ran a wee piece too, and I’m sure that’s just only the ones I know about.  If your looking at joining the coloured hair trend, here’s some great tips by Little Black Book on Pastel hair.

Fashion: Pink Hair!

Fashion, Hair

I’m reporting from a biased point of view.  I have pink hair and have had for about 8 years almost continuously.  It takes allot of upkeep but has been worth it the entire time.  It has turned into quite a trade mark for me, if I changed my hair colour I don’t think anyone would recognise me. (Bonus?!) And like most other things if you look hard enough you can find day to day normative examples of something different.  I thought I’d do just that.

Today society and fashion has opened its mind and broadened its horizons to accept that we can change the colour of our hair.  We can express our individuality and creativity outwardly in a semi permanent way (other than just covering our bodies with tattoos or piercings.  Pink is such a bright, beautiful and energetic colour its fantastic to be able to wear it every day!
These days getting the colour is easy, a dash of bleach to lighten your natural hair if necessary, and then add colour!  HUZZAR! Shades of pink vary and colours can be mixed together to form all new shades all together.
How to get pink hair?

COLOUR BUG – Temporary
FUDGE PAINTBOX – Semi Permanent (My Sponsor and my favourite dye!)

MANIC PANIC – Semi Permanent.  Also very popular but doesn’t last as long, but brilliant for the more pastel shades rather than highlighter bright.

Special Effects (FX)  – Semi Permanent.  Big in America and very bright.  Comes in larger bottles which is great for those with long hair or who re colour often.

Experiment with it a little, its exciting and can make a beautiful fashion statement!  I highly recommend.  Its very hard to be blue and grumpy with a full head of bright pink hair!

Pin-ups, pink hair and kitties!

Hair, photography
Kitties never cease to be anything but adorably cute (provided your not the one cleaning up any little “accidents”) and one of my besties Dolly Destory has been fostering them from the SPCA ove the winter. The kitties love her and also seemed to like playing with our jewelery and (much to our dismay) climbing up our pantyhose!

Big thanks to “Further Photography” for these!
If your feeling a little glum dress-up!  Looking glamorous as a sneeky way of making you feel really good. a touch of makeup and a faux fur coat sometimes is all it takes to do the trick!  I think we did this on a cold gloomy tuesday night…  All dressed up and no where to go, but it didnt really matter. I went to bed that night feeling a whole lot chirpier and slept like a baby!

Sunday was JUST as gloomy.  By now you might have figured out that I’m a HUGE summer fan.. I hate the cold, wet, windy winter weather and can’t wait for warmth and sunshine all the time.  I think I’m not the only one who feels like this either.  Sunday one of my other friends popped over and we went nuts with my little camera (hence the less than amazing quality) running around the Ironbank building, trying to stay dry before heading up the road to a local cafe for a Delicious hot toddy!  One of those has got to be my favourite “warm-up  my insides” drink for winter!!  If you haven’t had one – TRY IT!!  Its the best thing ever on a cold day!

Enjoy!

Pink hair, hair dye, and Fudge Paintbox

Hair
So I feel like writing about Hair dye.  I feel like it would also be a good opportunity to Pimp out the company that helps me keep my hair any colour but normal…  Fudge.
I am sponsored by Fudge, they give me hair dye every couple of months.. its not heaps but when you have had pink hair of various shades it really helps the old tight budget!  Bleach and several tubes of colour every 4 to 6 weeks does add up!
My Candy Phloss pink is a mixture of Raspberry Beret and Pink Moon…  Pink Moon gives it a neon shade and the Raspberry gives it a dark undertone so that when it fades a little it doesn’t go that awful Orange colour that a bad pink dye job goes.
Last night my flatmates had guests over and one of them is a rather glamorous being… Drag Queen by night and a high end makeup tutor by day.  As I was doing my hair last and the topic of hair was going around the table..
Bleaching – such a lay mans term.. instead call it “Lightening”
Dying – You dye clothes and carpet, you COLOR your hair.
This had us in absolute hysterics..  the flamboyant nature of the way we were told this was brilliant.. but there is a point to to it.  Doing something properly always makes a difference.  Keeping your regrowth under control, your colour fresh and your hair healthy all makes having coloured hair look more meaningful and less trashy. (if that’s the look your going for).
Alternative models often have coloured hair and the thing that separates the professional ones from the armature ones is the quality of their outfits, makeup and hair.
I wouldn’t say I’m the best at it but I’ve had pink hair for over six years now so I pride myself on looking after it and doing it properly.  In the corporate world its a whole different story… The last office I worked at was very corporate.  When I was in a telephone based role I had bright pink hair then I moved into a “first face for new staff” role.  When I applied for the role I was given the expectation that I would not be given the role unless I changed my hair color.
It was a significant career development for me and pay rise.  So I said “sure”  all the while grating my teeth.  After much thought I went out and bought a Wig.  I was not prepared to give up my hair colour (something that really makes me ME) but I still wanted the job.  Now companies have to be very careful when asking people to change their appearance.  So when I turned up in a wig there was absolutely nothing my old work could do.  I hated it but it was a compromise.
Now I work somewhere different (HOORAY) and they are relaxed and laid back.  I have been slowly transitioning my hair from black back to bright pink.  So last night I was a little daring with the bleach.  My hair is allot brighter today than the last time I “refreshed” my hair colour. AND I LOVE it!!
I thought I’d leave you with a little laugh.. a video I had filmed many years ago..

Pink to Raspberry

Hair
So I’ve had pink hair for a couple of years now. And generally is a combination of Pretty Flamingo, and Raspberry Beret and a little red depending on my mood.

Well last night I decided I wanted RADICAL… So I did a straight Rasperry Berret and it was the old darker formula too!

Forgive the crappy cell phone picture but thats my new rasperry pink almost purple verses the bright pink of me in my avitar! I’m hoping it willl fade to a slightly more pinker shade of raspberry.
I think it has more attitude!

             NOT THE HAIR!!!

I’ve alot more photos, which I’ll prolly upload to Facebook I think!  I’m going to have my business cards done soon, so I’ll be able to direct people to where my photos will be – Most likely – mywebsite!

www.missphloss.com COS ITS AWESOME!!

Satuday – Despite the weather DOOM predicted its was bright, warm and sunny! Weather doom predicters got it way wrong – I defianely wasn’t complaining!!!

Anyway I had an audition at 1pm.  I woke up bang on the dot of 10am, and cos I hand’t planned to get up till half past tried to doze for a wee bit. Braincells however took over – there was no way I was gonna ge a wink more.  I swear my brain has ADD some times.  It thinks of so many thins I even have trouble keeping up! Haha

I practiced my routine for an hour and then got ready – I can’t show you pictures cos the outfit is a surprise for another BIG event coming up!

The Audition was for Hoochy Koochy girls Burlesque troupe!  I was very nervous but that makes me perform better!
Most of the girls auditioning were Unitec or AUT Dance diploma students I think, or ballet and ballroom students!  I did a very traditional “tease” Burlesque routine to Minnie the Moocher by Cab Calloway.   I love the song and know it almost by heart!

I hear back later this week so don’t worry I’ll defiantely be letting everyone know how I go – Yes I have my hopes up, and maybe I’m wrong about it!   BUT I DON’T CARE!!     Haha
Although some of the other girls might have been more technical dancers, I’m not sure they all understood about TRUE burlesque the history and concept.  Any dancer can put together a MoulinRouge / PussyCat Dolls dance routine!  😉

Saturday Evening:  PHOTOSHOOT TIME!!

Loulou and I got all dressed up and  glam and went out with Flick our trusty Photographer to our awesome Graf-Art location we’d found!   Great photos and much funny times ensued!
Graf-artI’ll post up the photos in a seperate blog!

I decided to wear my new big hair – it was ticky and took a bit of perching and pinning to stay in one place, but next time I’ll have the technique SORTED!!  Here are more Pixxxxxxxxx!
